This is the time of year that I diligently take apart, clean, oil, re-line, re-sort, and re-stock my tackle. Your fishing gear will last longer...a lifetime even...if you take care of it by doing a little preventive maintenance (PR).
Remove the line from your reels. Take the reel apart and oil the gears (or if you're unsure of how they work take them to someone to be cleaned and oiled) Remember, a little oil goes a long way, no need to use too much. Buy some new line, appropriate for what you intend to catch, and re-spool the reel.
Check the eyelets on your rods. Make sure they are all attached firmly.
Separate your sinkers, hooks, spinners, lures, etc. neatly in partitioned tackle boxes. Remove any that are rusted or broken. Make a checklist for what you are low on and need to replenish before heading out on the water.
If you use a net, check it for dry-rot or damage. Nets can easily be fixed with some nylon line.
